Definition

A fixation refers to the brief pause of eye movement over a specific spatial location, typically lasting between 100 to 400 milliseconds, during which the eye's fovea remains stationary to gather high-resolution visual detail. In eye-tracking science and neuromarketing, a fixation represents the primary mechanism of visual attention, signaling active information intake, cognitive processing, and interest in a targeted stimulus element.

Key Components of a Fixation

Fixation Duration: The total elapsed time (measured in milliseconds) that the fovea aligns with a specific point, indicating the depth of cognitive processing or visual complexity.

Fixation Count: The aggregate number of times visual focus returns to a specific region or Area of Interest (AOI), reflecting sustained engagement or visual friction.

Time to First Fixation (TTFF): The precise time elapsed from stimulus onset until the user's gaze first lands on an element, quantifying its immediate visual prominence.

Saccades: The rapid, ballistic eye movements that occur during saccades fixations, during which visual input is temporarily suppressed by the brain.

Types of Visual Metrics Derived from Fixations

Foveal Fixation Density: Aggregated gaze points mapped directly onto a creative asset to generate visual heatmaps.

AOI Fixation Tracking: Isolate-and-measure metrics that quantify exact attention share on logos, copy, packaging, or call-to-action buttons.

Fixation Paths (Scanpaths): The sequential chronological chain of fixations and saccades showing how a viewer navigates a visual composition.
